HDTV

1. What is HDTV?
Digital TV (DTV) is a new television format that offers dramatic improvements in picture and sound quality. Its impact on the way we experience movies and programming at home will be even more significant than the introduction of color TV four decades ago. High definition television (HDTV), the most technologically advanced form of digital TV, provides a picture 5 to 10 times clearer than what you are watching today.

The characteristics that most distinguish HDTV from conventional (analog) TV are its wide screen format (aspect ratio), dramatically increased picture clarity, and crisp digital sound. HDTVs display a picture that has an aspect ratio of 16:9 (Width:Height) as opposed to 4:3 for analog televisions, meaning that movies no longer need to be cropped to fit the older TV screen proportions. HDTV audio is delivered as 5 channel Dolby Digital surround sound. Movies can be experienced as the director originally intended, in a home theater setting.

2. How can I receive HDTV programming?
High definition programming is available from three sources: off-air broadcasts (free), satellite service (paid subscription), and in select areas, cable (paid subscription).

There are several satellite services providers that offer coverage, with HDTV programming availability throughout the contiguous U.S.

Local off-air broadcasts are now available in markets that cover over 95% of U.S. television households. If you are among this majority, you can receive free off-air HDTV broadcasts from the major networks with an off-air antenna and the right equipment. Complementing off-air channels with satellite service greatly expands the variety of sporting events and movies available.

HDTV via cable is becoming widely available in an increasing number of markets. HDTV via cable should not be confused with digital cable, which refers to all digital programming provided via cable. The vast majority of digital cable channels are not in HDTV format.

3. Why would I want to upgrade to HDTV?
In contrast to the fuzzy images and sounds we have long been accustomed to, HDTV's astonishing picture clarity and lifelike audio create a realistic experience that fully involves the senses. With HDTV, the only thing that's fuzzy is the distinction between enjoying a movie in your living room and being there in person. The superior picture and sound are the only way to realize the full potential of today's best programming and movies (including DVDs). Even non-digital programming looks better on an HDTV monitor.

More and more digital programming is becoming available all the time - a trend that is accelerating as the adoption of digital television takes off.

4. What's the difference between HDTV and DTV?
Digital (DTV) is an all-encompassing term that refers to all of the various standards of digital transmission, 18 of which are recognized by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). High Definition TV (HDTV) specifically refers to the highest level of digital television. HDTV offers the greatest level of clarity (720 or 1080 scan lines) and features Dolby® Digital surround sound. Most of today's digital is currently broadcast in Standard Definition TV format (SDTV), a lower form of DTV that provides essentially the same resolution as analog TV (480 scan lines), but offers better picture quality and eliminates ghosting and picture noise. Increasingly however, programming is being offered in the higher resolution digital formats.

5. Will I need a new antenna to receive digital high definition television?
Satellite service customers can receive all the high definition programming offered by satellite providers with a Triple LNB Dish. Existing satellite customers who already own a multi-satellite (elliptical) dish with two LNBs can purchase a SAT-C Kit to make the upgrade.

Off-Air programming: If you have an existing outside antenna that is capable of receiving UHF stations, then you may be able to receive HDTV programming using your existing antenna. If you do not have an outside antenna or have a VHF-only antenna we recommend that you install a new VHF/UHF outdoor antenna. Many of viewers have reported good reception with simple UHF "rabbit ear" antennas in areas close to a broadcast source. You may wish to try one of these inexpensive solutions before purchasing a more expensive rooftop antenna.

Cable TV: No antenna is required, unless you would like to compliment your cable HDTV channels with off-air programming.

6. Do I need a new television to watch HDTV?
Although high definition set top boxes can convert HDTV programming from a digital to an analog format that your current TV can display, you will not be able to experience the full benefit of HDTV (crystal clear picture and sound) without a television monitor that is either HDTV-ready (requires an external set-top box) or HDTV-integrated (internal HDTV tuner).

7. What do the different HDTV formats mean (720p and the 1080i)?
The accepted Digital TV (DTV) standards allow broadcasters to choose from several formats in which to broadcast their digital programming. There are two high definition formats: 720p and 1080i. 720p refers to a 1280 pixel x 720 pixel format that has 720 horizontal scanning lines on the TV screen. The "p" stands for "progressive scan", a format in which each horizontal row of pixels is painted onto the screen sequentially. 1080i refers to a 1920 pixel x 1080 pixel format that has 1080 horizontal scanning lines. The "i" stands for "interlaced scan". In this format, the lines that make up the picture are generated in alternating odd/even fashion, with the odd numbered lines being painted on the screen first (1,3,5,...) and then the even lines (2,4,6,...) following. At 30 frames per second, the whole process happens so quickly as to be imperceptible. Almost all currently available HDTV monitors and set-top boxes will receive and decode both formats.

8. What do HDTV-ready and HDTV-capable mean?
There has been some inconsistency in the way the terms "HDTV-ready" and "HDTV-Capable" have been used by retailers and manufacturers. It is important to know that most HDTV monitors sold as "HDTV-Ready" are capable of displaying high definition digital television pictures but require the additional purchase of a digital receiver/decoder (set-top box) in order to receive and display HD programming. However, a growing number of newer HDTV monitors feature an internal tuner/decoder and do not require an external set-top box. A new generation of "cable-ready" monitors is being introduced that requires no external box for HDTV cable reception. It is important to know if the TV set you are considering requires an external set top box. Many set-top boxes offer the ability to receive satellite or cable programming, services that must be purchased by subscription.

9. Will HDTV make my existing television set obsolete?
No, your existing television set will still continue to be capable of receiving analog programming for a long time to come, although you will not be able to display HDTV programs in high definition format. You can, however, down-convert digital signals to an analog format your older TV can display with the addition of a digital set-top box.

10. Will I still be able to use my current home theater components (VCR, DVD player, game console) and watch regular TV shows?
Yes, consumers would be pretty angry if they bought a HDTV only to find that it didn't work with current technology. Manufacturers of HDTV monitors and set-top boxes will continue to include component video inputs (for peripherals) and antenna inputs (for receiving analog TV signals) for a long time to come. Your existing VCR will be able to play back your library of tapes when connected to the new digital television receivers. However, today's VCRs will not be able to record the high definition programs or play back HD-VHS tapes.
